|Lornah Kiplagat at New York Hilton lobby with Kenyan runners|
By Rita Field-Marsham
Kenyan runners are famous the world over for their success on the track.
Less well known, but also a fine example to the world, is their record out of the spotlight giving back to their communities. And achieved with commendable modesty.
I came across a group of young successful Kenyan runners recently in the lobby of a New York hotel, looking just like any group of youngsters, waiting patiently for their transport to arrive. No airs or graces about them.
Chatting with them was track star Lornah Kiplagat, holder of various long-distance world records and a tireless worker for her community, through the Lornah Kiplagat Foundation, which she set up to help provide an education for young girls and also to assist in the fight against AIDS. For information on her uplifting story go to lornah kiplagat foundation.
But Lornah is one of many Kenyan athletes who never forget their roots and use their fame to genuinely make a difference.
